Spine-ends rubbed, corners bumped, boards browned and with some foxing, lacking front free endpaper, some foxing to the first 50 pp., ownership inscription of ‘James Caithness Dalby’ on rear endpaper, else very good. * Translated from the French. In 1853 Yvan had published ‘Voyages et recits’ in Brussels. In 1855 he published ‘De France en Chine’ in Paris. * Melchior Yvan (1806 – 1873) was a French doctor and professor of natural history in Marseille. He was the Doctor of the Lagrené mission to China from 1843 – 1845. Upon his return he entered politics, sitting with the moderate left. Following the coup d’état of December 2, 1851, he was exiled to Brussels but returned to Paris in 1854. * In this book he gives an account of the voyage to China, with chapters on Teneriffe, Brazil, the Cape of Good Hope, and the Isle of Bourbon (Ile de la Reunion). * Rare.
