Orig. olive-brown cloth with gilt title and gilt decorations on the spine and the upper board, upper and lower board with blind-stamped border. Outside hinges and edges minimally rubbed, lower corners worn, edges of textblock, endpapers and title browned, frontisp. foxed, the ocassional spot of foxing here and there throughout, overall a very good copy. With the ca. 1865 ticket of Brisbane bookseller George Slater at the bottom of p. 333. * Rare. * Another edition in smaller format, in two volumes, and without a frontispiece was published in 1860 * A reissue (possibly using unsold sheets) appeared in the publisher’s Standard Library in ca. 1893. * The author’s earlier work, The vicissitudes of Italy, since the Congress of Vienna, 1859, was published under the name A.L.V. Gretton. * There is evidence that both books were by the same person, see the Dickens Journal Online entry for A. L. V. Gretton.
