With the ownership inscriptions on first blank leaves of all 5 volumes of ‘Ada Australia Hosking, Carrrara House, Jan 14th 65’. Ada Australia Pracey Hosking (1849 – 1925) was one of three daughters of John Hosking and Martha, nee Terry. Her father was a merchant and the second Mayor of Sydney. Carrara House is situated at 52 Vaucluse Rd, Vaucluse and was built in 1856 to a design by John F. Hilly. The house became the Strickland Convalescent Home for Women in 1915 and is now government-owned heritage-listed property. Ada Hosking’s maternal grandfather was Samuel Terry, the ‘Botany Bay Rothschild’. An unusual middle name. Her father through the collapse of his merchant company Hosking & Hosking had been responsible for the demise of the Bank of Australia in 1843.
